Nocturnal news from Finland

This was the head title of a newspaper today:

Today the sun is shining!
During this December the sun has been shining for 30 minutes, instead of the normal 11 hours.

Unfortunately it was playing mostly hide and seek. I couldn't find it.

That isn't 30 minutes per day, is it?

That is 30 minutes sunshine per month. Imagine that. 354,5 hours of blackness and 0,5 h sunshine. Hurrah. Viva la Finland.

Oh god, Taiga, my sympathies. Berlin is grim enough, dark at 3, but I think we've had at least three quarters of an hour of sunshine. At least!

Ach, BiB Sie glücklicher sonniger Bastardliebling! Ich möchte ein Berliner sein.

I have a Russian pal from my time in St. Petersburg, and she is from a (Finno-Ugric actually) bit of Russia even further north with winters where it regularly gets down to -688, and she now lives in Helsinki and EVEN SHE says Helsinki's climate is just horrid, horrid, horrid. Helsinki could so easily be my favourite place on earth if it wasn't for that tiny little detail...

Actually Helsinki is a lovely place to live in, but not in November, when it's utterly dark and no snow. This December has been extraordinary, it's almost like summer, but bloody dark.

The coldness doesn't matter much, because we've got central heating, thick walls, triple-windowglasses and woollen socks.
